South Hill Park is widely recognised as one of the most haunted houses in England. Many accounts tell of two little girls – neglected by their governess who is keeping an assignation with her lover – trapped in their first-floor nursery as flames consume the building.
Fireraisers’ imaginative revisiting of the mansion’s haunted past combined video projection, pyrotechnics and a specially composed soundscape, with a community cast of twenty-five performers who became the silent ghosts of the park’s tangled history. The audience, in masks, followed a trail through the darkened woods of the estate before finally arriving back at the sanctuary of the house.
